FIBA EuroBasket 2025: Cyprus takes on the weight of a world-class event

Cyprus is preparing to host, for the first time in its history, one of the largest sporting events on the planet: the FIBA EuroBasket! The 2025 tournament -co-hosted by Cyprus, Finland, Poland, and Latvia- will be held in our country at the Spyros Kyprianou Arena in Limassol and requires a particularly complex and demanding planning process. This is being carried out with operational adequacy and absolute professionalism by the Cyprus Basketball Federation and the Organizing Committee, in collaboration with FIBA, the Cyprus Government, institutional partners, and sponsors.

To carry out this national undertaking of hosting EuroBasket, Cyprus has, since March 2022 when FIBA entrusted us with the responsibility, been faithfully following FIBA’s event manual -nearly 400 pages long- which outlines in detail every aspect of the tournament’s preparation.

Human Resources

The team that will work on implementing FIBA EuroBasket in Cyprus will, during games’ time, exceed 170 people -not including additional service providers.

  • The Organizing Committee and external partners, along with the staff of the Cyprus Basketball Federation, number around 50 people.
  • FIBA staff at the Limassol venue will be approximately 40 people.
  • TV Production, with equipment and staff from abroad, around 80 people.
  • In addition, numerous personnel from sectors such as cleaning, catering, security, technical support, etc., will support the smooth operation of the tournament.
  • Furthermore, nearly 400 volunteers -an exceptionally high number for Cyprus- have already been approved, and are currently being integrated into various departments of the event, where they will cover critical areas of operations and support.

Accommodation

Seven different hotels in Limassol have been secured for the needs of the event, which will host:

  • The delegations of the six National Teams
  • FIBA officials and referees
  • Media representatives
  • Officials and VIP guests
  • TV crews
  • Event staff

In total, approximately 4,500 overnight stays have been reserved for FIBA EuroBasket 2025, a number that does not include independent bookings made by fans and visitors. These figures highlight the crucial contribution the event will have on the local economy.

Transportation

The transportation of the teams and stakeholders will be supported by a large vehicle fleet, including:

  • 22 buses
  • 10 vans
  • 30 to 40 private vehicles

The coordination of transportation is a key factor in the successful execution of the tournament, as is the case with any major sporting event.

Security and Cooperation with Authorities

The cooperation with the Cyprus Police and state authorities is excellent. Specific operational plans have already been drawn up, which include:

  • Security measures inside and outside the stadium
  • Regulation of traffic and movement
  • Escorting national team delegations
  • Use of specialized Police units

At the same time, a large number of security personnel will be deployed to ensure the smooth running of games and crowd control.

FIBA EuroBasket 2025 represents a challenge of national significance, but also a historic opportunity for Cyprus to be showcased internationally as a capable organizer of top-tier sporting events. The hard work carried out by all involved will lead to the organizational success of the tournament, and the fans who experience EuroBasket in person will enjoy unique and historic moments.
